Peter Pierobon

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Peter Pierobon grew up in North Vancouver. From the beginning he loved to make objects and was first inspired by the art of the First Nations artists working in BC during the 1960s. Peter studied In Rochester, NY, with Wendell Castle, the leading artist in contemporary studio furniture design, and subsequently worked with Castle before returning to Vancouver in 2000. He has exhibited and taught internationally for almost 30 years and is in museum collections from the Smithsonian to the National Gallery.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My inspirations have largely come from the world of fine art and in particular from indigenous cultures around the world. I am seeking to establish a fresh relationship between the primitive and the sophisticated, traditional and modern, while maintaining respect for the craft tradition. Primarily made of wood, my furniture seeks to satisfy functional needs while challenging precedents of design and concept. In the process, a personal vocabulary has evolved that reflects these criteria and the landscape that I live in.
